Malaysian Police Shave Heads of Men Caught Playing Casino Gambling Game The Malaysian government is to investigate whether the police abused prisoners arrested for participating in a public gambling game by shaving their heads. Malaysian police shaved the heads of ten ethnic Chinese Buddhist men who had been involved in a casino gambling game, and then released them on bail. Malaysia is a mostly Muslim country; gambling is prohibited under Islam. The actions of the Malaysian police have spurred an outcry of protest from human rights activists both inside Malaysia and internationally. Although the police claim that shaving the heads of detainees is according to their regular procedure, other contend that the action was intended to humiliate the casino gambling game playing prisoners, and that it violated their civil rights. Malaysian lawmakers have announced that they will carry out an investigation into the police actions. Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi said that, if the shaving of the gambling game players was found to be in violation of the law, disciplinary action would be taken. "Top police officials have said that the issue was related to police procedures and detainees," Abdullah said. "But the question here is whether the procedures were carried out in a right or wrong manner."
